My world is in..

Trip inside a fractal

conjunto de mandelbrotA journey into one of the most studied and known fractal called the Mandelbrot set in honor of Benoit Mandelbrot, father of fractal geometry.

The video has been made for projection in a planetarium, rendering each frame individually. 7 months of work for a zoom that takes us into the infinity of this mathematical-geometrical structure showing the self-similarity of their forms.

Each frame was individually rendered at 1080×1080 resolution (1080p) and strung together at 30 frames per second. Sidebands were added for compatibility with standard 1920×1080 resolution. No frame interpolation was used. All images were lovingly rendered by 12 CPU cores running 24/7 for 7 months.

A tribute to Benoit Mandelbrot (20 November 1924 — 14 October 2010) – a maverick of academia. See http://fractaljourney.blogspot.com/ for more technical details.

I was inspired by an idea by Ken Hawthorn (at the Fujitsu Planetarium, -De Anza College in Cupertino, California) and by Dr. Mandelbrot’s death last year to create a high definition rendering of a Mandelbrot zoom that might be appreciated by those who have never seen fractals and could be projected in a Planetarium setting. Planetarium operators are welcome to contact me to use this material gratis.
