The technique used to create classic animation cartoon can be used with physical items such as clay or, in this case, leaves folded paper figures forming ( origami ).
If imaging is performed on a monochromatic background, eg blue, imagery can be superimposed on a background with the technique called “Chroma” (An example of Chroma Key con MovieMaker is in this link).
